“I prefer rituals of the absurd and acts of dynamic beauty to experiences with realism and encounters with the mundane. I prefer poetry to story. I prefer images to words. I prefer questions to answers. Toy Theater—miniature spectacle—provides the exact tools and atmosphere to exercise and actualize these preferences — to generate dream, to devise wonder, to develop meticulous performance, to birth replete universes and new logics. In the miniature we discover an accuracy in the world, like scientists who study life under a microscope, we are able to see humanity in detail, humor in close up, and hope exploded.”
—Frank Maugeri
“Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We’ll need writers who can remember freedom—poets, visionaries—realists of a larger reality.”
—Ursula K. Le Guin
