ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
Guest Director/Choreographer Erika Chong Shuch brings a fresh, contemporary re-staging of the Kander & Ebb classic musical. This production shares a delightful, wild, and exuberant celebration of music and movement within a story that reflects a deep and ongoing crisis of oppression and fascism. Within Roble Studio Theater, the artistic team has built a world that reflects the individual and collective interests of the cast, and amplifies the themes of the original production in a modern context, asking the audience “What Would You Do?”
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER
Erika Chong Shuch (Director/Choreographer) performed as a Kit Kat in Cabaret at UC Santa Cruz’s Barn theater in 1996, and has been wanting to get back to it ever since. Erika is a performance maker, choreographer and director whose topic-driven ruminations coalesce into imagistic assemblages of music, movement, text, and design. Interested in expanding ideas around how performance is created and shared, Erika’s work has been performed in city halls, industrial office spaces, church basements, windy bluffs, and food courts. Her recent work For You (co-created by TAPS PhD alum Ryan Tacata and Rowena Richie, and a Creative Capital Project, commissioned by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, supported by the Center for Cultural Innovation) is a series of intimate performances for audiences of 12. Please learn more at www.foryou.productions. Current projects also include TheaterTheater, a participatory morality play exploring the hidden forces underlying everyday ethical choices (supported by San Francisco Arts Commission and Rainin Foundation). Erika has directed and created original works such as Iron Shoes, a new neo-feminist folk opera created with Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble (supported by Creative Work Fund, NEA). Her original work has also been commissioned and supported by Gerbode Foundation, Daejeon Metropolitan Dance Theater (Korea), and Berkeley Repertory Theater’s Groundfloor Program. Erika has been creating original work with her company, the Erika Chong Shuch Performance Project, since 2001.
As a choreographer for theater, Erika has worked at Theater for a New Audience (NY), Arena Stage (DC), Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Folger Theater (DC), Hudson Valley Shakespeare (NY), Kennedy Center (DC), Pittsburgh Public Theater, Playmakers Rep (North Carolina), Baltimore Center Stage, Kansas City Rep, and locally at American Conservatory Theater (SF), California Shakespeare Festival, and directed at Magic Theatre and Shotgun Players with upcoming shows at Getty Villa (LA)/Round House Theater (DC), The Court (Chicago), and The Globe (San Diego).
CABARET is presented by arrangement with Tams-Witmark, A Concord Theatricals Company: www.tamswitmark.com.
